What does the Vaughan Health Care Foundation do?
The Vaughan Health Care Foundation’s mandate is to raise funds for health care facilities and services in Vaughan, including a hospital. The Foundation’s primary focus is to mobilize the community to raise $200 million by way of a community Capital Campaign to construct and to purchase equipment for the new Vaughan Hospital.
Donations secured for the new Hospital in Vaughan will go directly towards hospital construction and equipment.
In July 2011, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced the approval of a new hospital in Vaughan. The announcement confirmed that the new hospital, to be built and operated by York Central Hospital, has been added to Ontario’s infrastructure plan. Planning is now underway for a Major Regional Health System for Southwest York Region. Extensive preparations are underway to issue tender documents for the new hospital by the 2014/15 fiscal year.
How much does the community need to raise for the new Hospital in Vaughan?
While it is still too early to identify the final cost of the new Hospital in Vaughan, we do know that the local community share for the new Hospital is estimated to be $420 million with the Province of Ontario providing approximately 70% of the total project cost. As part of that local share, the City of Vaughan has committed $80 million for purchase of lands and local share contribution and the Region of York has committed $117 million as part of its regional
funding commitment. This leaves another $200 million to be raised through community donations.
The Vaughan Health Care Foundation is in the early planning stages to launch a $200 million Capital Campaign to construct and equip the future Hospital in Vaughan. To date, the Foundation has designated $5 million for the Hospital Capital Campaign.
How much money has the VHC Foundation raised?
Since its founding in 2004, the VHC Foundation has raised $11.5 million. Funds have been allocated as follows:
- A total of $5 million is restricted in the Foundation’s Hospital Construction Funds and is counted towards the Capital Campaign.
- From 2004 to 2010, a total of $1.7 million was allocated for research and planning for health care services, including a hospital, for Vaughan.
- The total fundraising costs for the Foundation from 2004 to date is $2 million.
- $2.7 million is unrestricted. The Foundation is in the quiet planning phase to launch a $200 million Hospital Capital Campaign. A portion of these funds may be leveraged for Campaign start-up.

The new hospital will be located on Major Mackenzie Drivebetween Highway 400 and Jane Street.
What is the 10-year vision for a new Hospital in Vaughan?
The plans submitted to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care feature a full-service hospital that includes:
- state-of-the-art emergency services;
- new modern surgical services and operating rooms;
- medical inpatient and intensive care beds;
- advanced diagnostic imaging;
- specialized outpatient services that may include oncology, cardiac, eye and diabetes clinics;
- 80 per cent single patient rooms for superior infection prevention and control;
- a flexible hospital design to allow the space to adapt over time as new best practices emerge.
What is York Central Hospital’s role with regards to the new Hospital in Vaughan?
York Central Hospital (YCH) is responsible for planning, constructing, and operating the new hospital. YCH’s goal to create a Major Regional Health Care System for Southwest York Region includes the building of a new hospital in Vaughan and further development of the existing hospital in Richmond Hill to meet the health care needs of our growing community.
What will the hospital mean to the local economy?
A new hospital will create several thousand permanent jobs. The hospital will attract some of the finest talent in the medical field to Vaughan. In addition, several thousand jobs will be created during the construction phase. But more importantly, it will provide quality health care to the community and close to home.
